We will show the documentary, In Plain Site, and discuss strategies used to lure children into sex trafficking, as well as how adults and students can recognize the signs. At the end of the movie, anyone interested in volunteering with Be The Light can stay for a brief orientation into the various opportunities to serve and sign up to get involved.

Be The Light will be hosting our first street party for at risk youth this coming spring. We need organizers, a DJ for the sound system, planners, set up teams, food/beverages and helpers of all kinds!

GALVESTON COUNTY FOOD BANK
Sorting Donations:
The Galveston County Food Bank continually receives food product donations that need to be sorted before sending to the social service agencies that subsequently distribute food to those in need in Galveston County. Consequently, there are small group and individual volunteer opportunities in the dry sort room on Saturday mornings (9am to 12 noon) and weekdays (8am to 4pm).

Volunteers between the ages of 12 to 17 can help if accompanied by a supervisor or guardian. Groups of 10 to 12 are optimal. Because the Food Bank is a warehouse environment, volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes, avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling jewelry, and not wear fanny packs or camera cases.

In addition to sorting donated food items, The Galveston County Food Bank is looking for Program Outreach Volunteers and Mobile Food Distributors. Please be on the lookout: there are several special events in the coming months that will need volunteers!

Senior homebound box creation and homebound delivery program:
The Galveston County Food Bank is in need of volunteers for their Senior Homebound Box Creation program. Each month, 300 senior shut-in boxes are created in the warehouse by volunteer groups. The effort takes about two hours. Groups of 10 to 15 volunteers are optimal. Because the Food Bank is a warehouse environment, volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes, avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling jewelry, and not wear fanny packs or camera cases. Additionally, individuals are needed to deliver food boxes to homebound seniors and persons with disabilities once a month. Individuals must have a valid ID, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation. Current geographic homebound delivery need: La Marque and Texas City.

There are also several individual volunteer opportunities, including administration-related functions. Specific projects will vary based on the Galveston County Food Bank’s organizational need at the time of inquiry.

There are opportunities for individuals or small groups to support the attendees by collecting and distributing clothes, bibles, or food.

Houston Welcomes Refugees exists to mobilize our city to welcome refugees with compassion, hope and honor as they resettle and start a new life in Houston. The best way for Clear Creek to assist HWR is by participating in kit collections. There will be a kit collection day on February 24th at the Houston Welcomes Refugees facility in The Heights. If your small group would like to put together one or more kits the information and instructions for the kit can be found at https://www.houstonwelcomesrefugees.com/welcome-kit-list. If you don’t want to deliver the kits yourself you can contact Kate Somers and arrange to meet and drop off the kits any time before February 24th.

THE MERCY TREE
Individuals, families, or small groups can volunteer to provide a meal at the Mercy Tree on any “OPEN” date. Planning ahead is necessary because dates quickly fill up often months in advance. “OPEN” dates can be found on the website (www.themercytree.org) by clicking on the volunteer tab and scrolling through the calendar. When you click on the date, the time and location will appear. Email (volunteer@themercytree.org) to let the Mercy Tree know the “OPEN” date that you would like to sign up for.
Please cook or purchase a simple meal, and provide cold drinks for 20 to 25 individuals. Use disposable food containers and include paper plates, napkins, and plastic ware.
Also, groups may want to provide needed items which can be found under the “donate tab – other donations. Or, groups might consider organizing a fundraiser of some sort. Please advise me if either of these options is chosen.
Thank you for considering the Mercy Tree as a Go Local Opportunity and for blessing our clients with a meal or other needs.
